Chapter 12

My fingers played with the edges of my new hair. My head felt lighter that was for sure. Funnily enough a small part of me, one I didn’t know was there was sad about losing the weight.

In my other hand, I held a bag that had the rest of my hair. Bea had been most gracious to point me in the direction of the shop I could sell it to, which we were heading to right now.

Since it wasn’t too far away, Luke decided we should walk rather than taking the car. He had been quiet since we left Bea and the other chattering stylists. Also, he was distant. Unlike at the house, he didn’t touch me at random times and made a point to keep his hands to himself, lacing the fingers behind his back.

I felt the eyes on me. It was hard not to notice them. They had been on us since we left the shop. Thankfully, it seemed the horde wasn’t that interested in me when I wasn’t with the whole group of them ... or maybe it was just Adam? He seemed to be the celebrity of the five of them.

Still, they stared.

Even the humans. It was easy to tell the difference between the humans and mages. It wasn’t some magical mark or anything, but the way they held themselves, hunched down, eyes to the ground, except when they were chancing looks at me. Also, their clothes were not as regal, I supposed was the word. Plain colors, in simple styles. No golden embellishments or weapons of any kind. It made me look down at my own clothes.

I’d chosen a flowy white blouse with a purple vest. When buttoned it caused my breasts to press up, giving me the illusion of cleavage. A pair of black pants covered my legs, so tight that Luke had done a double take when he’d seen me. On my feet, prune colored boots teased my ankles.

I didn’t exactly dress like someone who was supposed to be serving the mages. Not that I was really serving. My last two times trying to cook had ended in black smoke and the men running to the screams of some alarm. I’d since given up on cooking for them. They didn’t seem too bothered by it though.

“Luke,” I started, moving closer to him as another couple passed us. The human trailing after them glanced at me curiously before hurrying after the couple. “Luke,” I tried again, and a visible tension in his shoulders showed. Getting frustrated, I grabbed his arm and raised my voice, “Lucas.”

“Do not touch me,” he hissed, sounding more like his brother Blake than his teasing, fun-loving self. Luke jerked his arm from my grasp, his eyes boring into me like he was trying to tell me something.

Frowning, I dropped my hand and ducked my head. Had I done something wrong? I stayed quiet until we arrived at our destination. Luke pushed the glass door open, not waiting for me to follow after him before letting it go.
